I hold MSFT in my retirement income portfolio and I get asked all the time whether I am worried about the yield. Here is my answer. I do not care about the current yield. I care about the yield on cost in ten years. Microsoft Corporation has raised the dividend every year for as long as I have owned it. If that continues my yield on cost will be solid regardless of what the stock price does. The mistake I see income investors make is chasing yield. You buy something yielding 8 percent and it cuts the dividend. Now you have capital loss and income loss. I would rather own a 2 percent grower that becomes a 6 percent yield on cost in a decade than a 7 percent yielder that gets cut. Slow and steady wins this race.

MSFT tangible book value vs market cap. Run the numbers yourself. The gap is enormous. You are paying for goodwill and brand premium and hope. Microsoft Corporation is a fine business but at this price you are gambling on future cash flows that may never materialize. I will pass until the multiple compresses to something that reflects actual asset value.

Every time I look at MSFT I see the same thing. A crowded long with deteriorating fundamentals hiding behind a narrative. Microsoft Corporation guided down last quarter and the stock went up. That is not a healthy market. That is momentum. And momentum works until it does not. Short interest is low. Borrow is cheap. Nobody is positioned for a downside surprise. That is exactly when surprises hurt the most. I am not saying crash tomorrow. I am saying the risk reward is terrible from here.

Looking at MSFT through a semiconductor cycle lens. Microsoft Corporation is in the semi supply chain and the cycle dynamics matter more than company specific fundamentals right now. Fab utilization is above 90 percent which is the threshold where pricing power shifts to the suppliers. But capex is elevated and new capacity is coming online in the next 12 to 18 months. That typically leads to a supply glut and margin compression. We are in the sweet spot of the cycle now but the inflection is coming. Are you pricing in the cycle turn?

The 2s10s spread is telling you something about MSFT that the equity market is ignoring. The curve is pricing in slowing growth. Microsoft Corporation is a growth stock. Growth stocks do poorly when growth slows. It really is that simple. The bond market has been right more often than the stock market at inflection points. Right now the bond market is flashing yellow and the stock market is acting like the light is green. One of them is wrong. I am betting on the bond market.

I am going to say something unpopular about MSFT. The institutional consensus on Microsoft Corporation is bought and paid for. The sell side analysts covering this name have investment banking relationships with the company. Their buy ratings are not independent analysis. They are marketing materials. When you see 90 percent buy ratings on a stock trading at a premium multiple you should ask yourself who benefits from that rating. Follow the money. I am not saying the business is bad. I am saying the analysis you are reading is compromised. Do your own work. Read the 10-K. Read the footnotes. Stop relying on analysts who are paid to tell you to buy.

MSFT weekly RSI showing bearish divergence. Price made a higher high but RSI made a lower high. Microsoft Corporation momentum is fading even as the price rises. This is not a sell signal by itself but it is a warning. I am watching volume on the next pullback. If volume expands on red days the divergence is confirmed and I am reducing.

MSFT is the most recommended stock on every finance app right now. Microsoft Corporation is on every buy list. Every analyst has it at buy or overweight. When everyone agrees the trade is crowded. And crowded trades unwind violently when the narrative shifts. I am not shorting yet. But I took my profits and I am watching from the sidelines with popcorn.

W
wall_st_orphan🐻 Bajista10d

I spent fifteen years on institutional trading desks before I walked away and I can tell you that the order flow in MSFT does not look like organic demand. Microsoft Corporation is being accumulated by algorithms and passive flows, not by fundamental buyers making conviction based decisions. When the machines decide to rotate the selling will be just as mechanical. The price action looks strong but the foundation is synthetic. I have seen this pattern before. It does not end well for the retail investors who think they are riding institutional coattails.

Let me be direct about MSFT. Microsoft Corporation is priced for perfection in an imperfect world. The Shiller adjusted P/E is well above historical norms. The EV/EBITDA multiple is in the top decile of its sector. Mean reversion is not a theory. It is a mathematical certainty. The only question is timing. I keep hearing bulls say "this time is different" and "the multiple is justified by growth." I have been investing long enough to know those are the two most expensive sentences in the English language. Every bubble in history was justified by growth that was supposed to last forever. Very few did. The smart move here is patience. Let the multiple compress. Let the narrative crack. Then buy the same business at a reasonable price. What is your exit plan if the growth slows by even 3 percent?

Looked at MSFT on a net-net basis. Not even close. Microsoft Corporation trades at a multiple of tangible book that assumes everything goes right for the next decade. Where is the margin of safety? I will tell you where. Nowhere. You are paying for a story and calling it an investment. The balance sheet tells a different story than the stock chart. Goodwill and intangibles are a massive chunk of assets. Strip those out and the tangible book is a fraction of the market cap. That means if the growth narrative breaks you are holding equity worth half what you paid. Maybe a third. I have seen this playbook enough times to know how it ends.

K
kurt_the_bear🐻 Bajista23d

I have been building a bear case on MSFT for weeks and I think the situation is worse than most people realize. Let me walk through it. Microsoft Corporation is carrying debt levels that look manageable when rates are low and revenue is growing. But what happens when growth normalizes and refinancing costs are 200 basis points higher than the debt they are rolling off? The interest coverage ratio deteriorates fast. That is not a hypothetical. That is arithmetic. Then there is the competitive landscape. Two quarters ago a new entrant started taking share in the core market. Management dismissed it on the earnings call. The next quarter the share loss accelerated. Management blamed macro. Do you see the pattern? When management blames macro for company specific problems it is usually a sign the moat is narrower than they claimed. Inventory is also building. Days sales of inventory is up meaningfully year over year. That is either channel stuffing or demand softening. Neither is good. I have seen this combination before. High debt, rising competition, building inventory, and a management team in denial. It rarely ends well for shareholders. What data point would change my mind? Sustained organic growth reacceleration for two consecutive quarters. Not one. Two. One quarter can be a fluke or a benefit from easy comps. Two quarters is a trend. Until I see that I am not touching this.

I keep seeing bears call MSFT overvalued and I keep thinking they are missing the forest for the trees. Microsoft Corporation is not a stock you value on trailing earnings. You value it on the opportunity in front of it. The TAM is massive and expanding. They are gaining share. Unit economics are improving. What else do you want? The thing that gets me excited is the land and expand dynamic. Once Microsoft Corporation gets a customer in the door the expansion revenue follows almost automatically. That means the growth you see today understates the growth you will see in two years. The bears look at the P/E and panic. I look at the revenue retention numbers and see a business that compounds faster than anyone gives it credit for. Is the multiple aggressive? Sure. But aggressive multiples on secular growth stories have been the winning trade for a decade. When does that trade stop working? That is the real question.

S

I keep asking bull case supporters of MSFT one question and nobody gives me a good answer. What happens when the competition catches up? Microsoft Corporation has a first mover advantage but advantages erode. Competitors are investing heavily. The moat looks wide today but moats narrow when the prize is big enough. I see at least two well funded competitors making real inroads. In two years the competitive landscape will look different. Is anyone pricing that?

I track the Sahm Rule and LEI religiously and both are whispering that the economy is softer than the equity market reflects. MSFT is exactly the kind of name that gets hammered in a growth scare. Microsoft Corporation sells into a discretionary spending environment. When consumers pull back this name gets cut in half. I am not predicting a recession. I am saying the probability is higher than the multiple implies. Position accordingly.

Copilot seat attach rates are the key metric to watch. If they hit 30% of M365 seats at 30/month that's 50 billion in incremental ARR. This is the most predictable AI revenue stream in tech.

Trading at 35x forward earnings. For a company growing 15% that's not cheap. The AI narrative is priced in. I trimmed last quarter and waiting for a pullback.

Azure taking share from AWS. The AI workloads are going to Azure because of the OpenAI partnership. This is a multi-year structural shift.

MSFT Azure grew 29% last quarter. Copilot revenue is scaling and the enterprise seat licenses are sticky. This is the best risk-adjusted large cap in tech. Fair value in my DCF is 480, trading at 420 today.

MSFT dividend yield is tiny at 0.7% but they grow it 10% a year. In 10 years that yield on cost will be close to 2%. Plus the buybacks. Best compounder in the market.

MSFT benefits from AI capex spending but also is one of the biggest spenders. Their capex doubled this year. The question is whether Copilot revenue catches up to the infrastructure investment. Could take 2-3 years to see the ROI.

A

Honestly, I think MSFT is one of those stocks people hold because it's comfortable, not because the valuation makes sense right now. Trading around 35x forward earnings, it's priced for perfection in a way that makes my index-fund brain nervous. Yeah, Azure is growing and Copilot is everywhere, but a lot of that future is already baked into the price. When I look at broad market ETFs, MSFT is already one of the heaviest weights - so if you're holding VTI or QQQ, you've got plenty of exposure without adding more concentration risk on top. I'm not saying it's a disaster waiting to happen. It's a genuinely great business. But "great business" and "great stock to buy today" aren't the same thing. So real talk - with MSFT sitting at ~35x forward earnings, what specific catalyst would actually push you to either add a position today, or finally trim if you've been sitting on gains?

M
mike_clark🐂 Alcista87d

MSFT is setting up a trap and everyone's walking into it Chart's looking "okay" on the surface - price coasting around $415, holding above the 50-day MA, RSI sitting mid-range. Sounds healthy right? That's exactly the problem. This is the kind of slow bleed setup that lures in dip buyers right before a real flush. Azure growth came in around 21% last quarter. Bulls keep screaming "AI tailwinds!" but that number has been decelerating for four straight quarters and nobody wants to talk about it. Meanwhile capex is absolutely exploding - they're spending like a startup while trading at 34x forward earnings. That math only works if the AI monetization lands PERFECTLY. I'm watching $400 as the real line in the sand. Break that with volume and the "safe haven tech" narrative cracks fast. So here's what I actually want to know - with Azure growth already sliding to 21% and capex ballooning quarter over quarter, which line on the income statement worries you most right now?

E
eric740🐻 Bajista88d

Everyone keeps acting like MSFT at ~34x forward earnings is a no-brainer because of Copilot and Azure growth. I get it - the AI story is compelling. But we're sitting here with VIX creeping back toward 20, enterprise IT budgets getting squeezed in a higher-for-longer rate environment, and people are treating this thing like it's immune to macro headwinds. Azure growth came in around 28-29% last quarter which sounds great until you realize the market's already pricing in acceleration from here. Any deceleration and this multiple compresses fast. Cloud deals are also taking longer to close - I'm hearing this from folks in the space. That's not priced in at 34x. I'm not saying it's a short, but the risk/reward feels asymmetric to the downside right now and nobody wants to talk about it. So real question - with MSFT trading at ~34x forward earnings, what's the actual bear case catalyst that finally cracks that multiple, and why do bulls think that scenario is impossible?

L
limitOrder🐻 Bajista89d

MSFT is the most overrated "safe haven" stock in the market right now and I'm tired of pretending otherwise. Trading at 35x forward earnings while Azure growth is decelerating and Copilot still hasn't proven it moves the needle on actual revenue. Meanwhile Nadella and other insiders have been quietly trimming positions - not panic selling, sure, but not exactly loading up either. The cloud space is getting brutal with AWS grinding them down and Google actually waking up on the AI side. And the balance sheet isn't the fortress people pretend it is. $80B+ in long-term debt doesn't get talked about nearly enough when everyone's busy worshipping the brand. I've been watching the options chain and the picture isn't pretty for the bulls. So here's what I actually want to know - with MSFT sitting at 35x forward earnings and deceleration in its core growth engine, what is the options chain pricing in for the next two quarters that justifies anyone selling puts down here?
