People keep asking whether AMZN is a buy here. The question I ask instead is whether Amazon.com Inc. is a compounder. And the answer is yes. ROIC is consistently above 20 percent. Reinvestment runway is deep. Management has proven they can allocate capital at high rates of return. That is the formula. Everything else is noise. The thing nobody talks about with compounders is that the multiple rarely looks cheap. You know why? Because the market eventually figures out that these businesses are special. The multiple stays elevated because the earnings keep growing into it. If you wait for a cheap multiple on a great compounder you will wait forever. I learned that lesson the hard way with several names I passed on five years ago. The one risk I am watching is whether the reinvestment runway is as deep as management claims. If they start doing buybacks at these levels instead of reinvesting in growth that tells you the runway is shorter than advertised. What would make you doubt the compounding thesis?

Every time I look at AMZN I see the same thing. A crowded long with deteriorating fundamentals hiding behind a narrative. Amazon.com Inc. guided down last quarter and the stock went up. That is not a healthy market. That is momentum. And momentum works until it does not. Short interest is low. Borrow is cheap. Nobody is positioned for a downside surprise. That is exactly when surprises hurt the most. I am not saying crash tomorrow. I am saying the risk reward is terrible from here.

I keep asking bull case supporters of AMZN one question and nobody gives me a good answer. What happens when the competition catches up? Amazon.com Inc. has a first mover advantage but advantages erode. Competitors are investing heavily. The moat looks wide today but moats narrow when the prize is big enough. I see at least two well funded competitors making real inroads. In two years the competitive landscape will look different. Is anyone pricing that?

F
fiduciary_fury🐻 Bajista3d

I am going to say something unpopular about AMZN. The institutional consensus on Amazon.com Inc. is bought and paid for. The sell side analysts covering this name have investment banking relationships with the company. Their buy ratings are not independent analysis. They are marketing materials. When you see 90 percent buy ratings on a stock trading at a premium multiple you should ask yourself who benefits from that rating. Follow the money. I am not saying the business is bad. I am saying the analysis you are reading is compromised. Do your own work. Read the 10-K. Read the footnotes. Stop relying on analysts who are paid to tell you to buy.

I spent fifteen years on institutional trading desks before I walked away and I can tell you that the order flow in AMZN does not look like organic demand. Amazon.com Inc. is being accumulated by algorithms and passive flows, not by fundamental buyers making conviction based decisions. When the machines decide to rotate the selling will be just as mechanical. The price action looks strong but the foundation is synthetic. I have seen this pattern before. It does not end well for the retail investors who think they are riding institutional coattails.

I have been investing long enough to remember when AMZN was a fraction of its current size. Amazon.com Inc. was a different business back then. Smaller. Hungrier. More nimble. The management team had something to prove. Now they have proven it. The stock has compounded at rates that would have seemed impossible a decade ago. But success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds mediocrity. Mediocrity breeds decline. I am not saying Amazon.com Inc. is in decline. I am saying the trajectory from here is different than the trajectory that got us here. The law of large numbers is unforgiving. A trillion dollar company cannot double as easily as a ten billion dollar company. The growth rate that got you here will not get you there. That is not pessimism. That is arithmetic. The question I keep asking myself is whether the current management team can reinvent the business for the next decade. The team that built the current moat is not always the team that builds the next one. Different skills. Different temperament. Different appetite for risk. What is your read on whether Amazon.com Inc. can make that transition?

D
delusion_detector🐻 Bajista8d

The bull thesis on AMZN is built on three assumptions and I think two of them are wrong. Assumption one: growth continues at current rates. Assumption two: margins hold or expand. Assumption three: the competitive moat is durable. Amazon.com Inc. is a good business but good businesses at bad prices are still bad investments. Let me attack assumption two because that is where I see the biggest disconnect. Input costs are rising. Labor costs are rising. The pricing power that protected margins last cycle is showing cracks. Amazon.com Inc. raised prices and volume softened. That is elastic demand. When demand is elastic you cannot raise prices to offset margin compression. You have to eat it. And eating margin compression while trading at a premium multiple is a recipe for multiple compression and earnings decline at the same time. That is the double whammy nobody is pricing for.

M
MarginMason🐻 Bajista9d

Looked at AMZN on a net-net basis. Not even close. Amazon.com Inc. trades at a multiple of tangible book that assumes everything goes right for the next decade. Where is the margin of safety? I will tell you where. Nowhere. You are paying for a story and calling it an investment. The balance sheet tells a different story than the stock chart. Goodwill and intangibles are a massive chunk of assets. Strip those out and the tangible book is a fraction of the market cap. That means if the growth narrative breaks you are holding equity worth half what you paid. Maybe a third. I have seen this playbook enough times to know how it ends.

R
recession_radar🐻 Bajista10d

I track the Sahm Rule and LEI religiously and both are whispering that the economy is softer than the equity market reflects. AMZN is exactly the kind of name that gets hammered in a growth scare. Amazon.com Inc. sells into a discretionary spending environment. When consumers pull back this name gets cut in half. I am not predicting a recession. I am saying the probability is higher than the multiple implies. Position accordingly.

The 2s10s spread is telling you something about AMZN that the equity market is ignoring. The curve is pricing in slowing growth. Amazon.com Inc. is a growth stock. Growth stocks do poorly when growth slows. It really is that simple. The bond market has been right more often than the stock market at inflection points. Right now the bond market is flashing yellow and the stock market is acting like the light is green. One of them is wrong. I am betting on the bond market.

Nobody is pricing the tail risk in AMZN. Everyone models the base case and the bull case. Nobody models the black swan. Amazon.com Inc. has concentrated exposure to risks that are low probability but high impact. Regulatory action. Supply chain disruption. Key person dependency. Any one of these hitting would reprice the stock 30 to 50 percent overnight. The probability is low. The impact is catastrophic. When you are priced for perfection the tail risk is where the real danger lives. I am hedging my long exposure with out of the money puts. Insurance is cheap when nothing is going wrong.

AMZN tangible book value vs market cap. Run the numbers yourself. The gap is enormous. You are paying for goodwill and brand premium and hope. Amazon.com Inc. is a fine business but at this price you are gambling on future cash flows that may never materialize. I will pass until the multiple compresses to something that reflects actual asset value.

AMZN is the most recommended stock on every finance app right now. Amazon.com Inc. is on every buy list. Every analyst has it at buy or overweight. When everyone agrees the trade is crowded. And crowded trades unwind violently when the narrative shifts. I am not shorting yet. But I took my profits and I am watching from the sidelines with popcorn.

the advertising business is the hidden gem here. 50% margins growing 20%+. everyone focuses on retail and aws but ads are where the incremental profit is

Retail margins are still thin. The advertising business is where the profit is. 50%+ margins and growing 20%+. That's the hidden gem people miss.

G

Capex is massive right now. Like 60-70 billion this year. That's going to depress FCF for a while. Long term good but short term the multiple is hard to justify.

AWS reaccelerating to 19% growth. Retail margins improving. Advertising is now a 50B business. AMZN is the quiet compounder that nobody talks about. 220 is fair value, trading at 190.

T

AMZN retail margins are thin and AWS growth is decelerating. At 45x earnings it's not cheap. I need to see AWS back above 20% growth to justify the multiple.

M
michelle1973😐 Neutral86d

Everyone keeps acting like AWS justifies whatever multiple the market slaps on AMZN, but I'm not buying it. The stock's sitting around 40x forward earnings right now - for a company where retail is still a low-margin grind and advertising is the actual secret sauce nobody wants to talk about. Book value? Basically irrelevant here, which already makes me nervous as a value guy. AWS growth has been decelerating for years. Yes it re-accelerated a bit recently, but we're chasing a narrative at this point, not fundamentals. The market's paying a premium assuming AI workloads will flood into AWS indefinitely. That's a LOT of faith baked into 40x. And honestly the advertising business quietly does massive margins but gets zero respect in the valuation conversation. So here's what I actually want to know - with AMZN trading at ~40x forward earnings, what's the single most overhyped aspect of the bull thesis that's inflating that multiple, and what's criminally underrated by most retail investors?

D
danielle841🐂 Alcista87d

Unpopular take: Amazon is still a story stock masquerading as a value play, and most retail investors are confusing "big company" with "cheap company." Everyone's celebrating the AWS recovery and the margin expansion, which fine, fair enough. But AMZN is still trading somewhere around 40-45x forward earnings. For a company this size, that's not a bargain - that's paying a growth multiple for a business that's increasingly fighting wars on five fronts simultaneously: cloud, ads, retail, logistics, AI. Spreading capital that thin doesn't usually end well for shareholders. The book value situation is equally rough. You're paying enormous premiums over tangible assets, banking almost entirely on future cash flows that are NOT guaranteed. And yet the bulls keep pointing to AWS like it's a separate miracle business that justifies everything else. So here's what I actually want to know: given that AMZN trades at ~43x forward earnings, what's the single most overhyped part of the Amazon bull case that people treat as a sure thing but is actually fragile if you stress-test it?

E
eric🐂 Alcista88d

Alright, unpopular take incoming - AMZN at ~$195 feels more like a story stock right now than a fundamentals play, and the chart agrees with me more than the bulls want to admit. Yes, it bounced clean off the 200-day MA back in April and RSI has been hovering mid-range, which technically isn't bearish. But we've been grinding resistance in the $195-$200 zone for weeks without a convincing breakout. That's not strength, that's hesitation. AWS reacceleration is real, ad revenue is legit - I'm not denying the business is firing. But the market's pricing in a LOT of "what could be" between AI infrastructure spend, Anthropic bets, and the whole logistics reinvention narrative. Fundamentals are good. Great, even. But "great" at 40x forward earnings needs to clear that $200 wall with conviction, not crawl. So genuinely asking - with AMZN trading near $195 and a 40x forward multiple, how much of that valuation is actual earnings power versus the market just repricing the AI narrative on top of a retailer?

F
fibTrader40🐻 Bajista89d

AMZN at ~$185 feels like the market is completely ignoring the macro overhang here. Everyone's celebrating AWS reigniting but nobody wants to talk about what happens if enterprise IT spend gets squeezed in a stagflation scenario. VIX has been creeping back up and credit spreads aren't exactly screaming "risk on" right now. And yeah, AWS is impressive. But retail margins are still razor thin and advertising revenue - which is basically carrying the profitability story - is cyclical. That's a problem if consumer spending rolls over harder than the soft-landing crowd expects. The part that bugs me most? The implied volatility on near-term AMZN contracts is actually relatively compressed compared to where it was six months ago. Market's pricing in calm. I don't buy it. With AMZN sitting at $185 and the options chain implying maybe 6-7% expected moves into earnings, what do you think the smart money is actually hedging against that the IV isn't fully pricing in yet?
